Scott Jurek, vegan ultramarathon athlete and seven-time consecutive winner of the Western States 100 (really, that’s just the tip of the iceberg) just alerted his Twitter followers to a great article about him in today’s New York Times.
Diet and Exercise to the Extremes, by Mark Bittman, takes a quick look at what it’s like to have “training weeks of 140 miles and more, ‘easy’ runs of 40 miles and interval training that includes uphill three-mile repeats, all culminating in races that are often 100 miles or more, sometimes through deserts or frozen wastelands or up and down mountains” – all on a vegan diet. Jurek shows us that, though his training is more intense than most humans can likely handle, his diet is actually quite reasonable.
The article is published just a day before Jurek is set to run the 24 Hour Run World Championship in Brive, France. The race is put on by the International Association of Ultrarunners, and Scott is representing the US as part of the USA National Team. The course is only 1.4 kilometers long, and runners continuously run the loop attempting to cover as many miles as possible in 24 hours. Apparently, he’s aiming to set a new American record, which currently stands at 162 miles and is held by Mark Godale.
Live coverage of the event will begin at 4am Eastern Standard Time on May 13th (that’s today!) on the World Championships 2010 website.
Best of luck to Scott and the entire team!!!
