My apologies to regular readers, but The Barefoot Experiment is going to be seeing an abundance of shoe-related posts for a little while. The shoes will always be minimalist running shoes (despite almost falling into a pair of Brooks Cascadia 5 this week – sweet shoe though!), but as I ramp up my mileage while coming back from injury, I’m experimenting with some shoe options to allow me to run while still taking it a bit easy on my tendon. I’ve worked so hard at recovering that I would hate to screw it all up with one or two silly runs!
The choice is entirely my own. My doctor is pro-minimalist and is not encouraging me to put on clunkers. The shoe salesman from my new favorite store (Fleet Feet Pittsburgh) encouraged me to stay in my FiveFingers, and the kind folks over on the Runner’s World forums have been telling me that I will regret anything but the most minimal shoe, and that I should stick with my current running style.
I am. I’m not going big and clunky, but I already run in FiveFingers (and love them), and there are some other really awesome minimalist shoes out there! So for a little while at least, I’m going to be adding some new footwear to the mix – minimal though it may be – to keep me safe as I restrengthen my body. You can see this reflected in my recent incorporation of a racing flat into my training.
